Don't just point your finger....No nada más apuntes el dedo

I. Last week on “Charlando”, there was a guest that used an improper term to refer to a gay male in the Latino community; maricón. The word maricón is a colloquial term that is often used very loosely within the Latino community, and due to the ambiguous nature of the word we do not know if in fact it carried a malicious intention during the talk show. Whether the word was used to humiliate or not, however, we must raise awareness of the sensitivity that the word carries for many in the LGBT community. I encourage the public to use this incident as a learning tool to realize that the word carries a negative connotation, and that it is not a word that is generally accepted or embraced in the LGBT community.

I. Maricón; una palabra coloquial para describir a un hombre gay en la comunidad Latina fue usada por un visitante en el programa de televisión “Charlando”. Suele ser usada casualmente, e incluso es demasiada la gente que no reconoce el significativo humillante que se carga la palabra. Debido al uso ambiguo, no podemos descifrar si su intención fue con malicia durante el programa. Haya sido usada de manera insultante o no, es necesario educar al público de que el uso de la palabra no es ideal. Los motivo a utilizar este incidente como una ficha de aprendizaje para todos aquellos que frecuentan la palabra, y realizar que no es una palabra aceptada y mucho menos recibida con orgullo en la comunidad LGBT.
